Do Techies Really Know How Their Product Is Used?

Personas, actors, meetings, discussion, voice of the customer? These are all methods that we use to show developers and engineers that they are not the customers of our products. Bonnie Rind explores this further in Do Techies Really Know How Their Product Is Used?

Show them in person

Personas, actors, meetings to review of market research, and other methods are great ways to communicate what has been learned about customers/users, but the best way by far I have found is to actually get techies and others to participate in the research. It's easy to ignore or discount information if it's in a document or presentation; it's much harder to if you're there in person watching it happen in real time. People tend to be more engaged, more receptive, and can pick up on many more details when they see it for themselves compared to when you just translate the information for them.
