Establishing a Product Marketing Process
We are at a phase of establishing a start-up Web 2.0 company and developing our prototype. As I'm in charge of the product management and marketing, I would appreciate an expert's list of topics we should cover in the product marketing discussions.
This could take a whole book to answer! But here is some guidance...
Companies divide the responsibilities between product
management and product marketing in many different ways, but we generally find
that the product marketing manager is responsible for developing the
go-to-market strategy.
We teach a process that connects the role of product
marketing to executive management goals, product management, marketing
communication, and the sales channel. Within that process, product marketing
owns the development of buyer personas, targeting and segmentation, message
development, alignment of selling and buying processes, assessment of marketing
assets, and certain aspects of content creation for sales tools and programs.
In addition, product marketing monitors the metrics associated with marketing
execution, continuously improving all of the above-mentioned components of the
strategy to ensure that the company's marketing budget is well-invested.
My Buyer Persoan blog has a section devoted to the role of product marketing, that may provide you with more information, specific to your needs. Just locate the category in the right column for "Product Marketing Redefined" and you'll find all of the posts related to that topic.
If you want detailed information about the role of product marketing, consider attending the Effective Product Marketing seminar.
